The First Battle of the Marne was an offensive during the First World War by the French and British Armies against the advancing German Army. Both sides sustained over a quarter of a million losses but the Allied armies successfully stopped the German advance on Paris.

The Battle of Mons was the first major action of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War. The British army attempted to hold the Mons-Conde canal against the German 1st Army. The British Army was commanded by Sir John French and sustained over 1,600 casualties. The German Army was commanded by Alexander Von Kluck and sustained between 2,000 and 5,000 casualties. At Mons a total of 5 Victoria Crosses were awarded, the first of the war. The Victoria Cross is Britains highest award for valour.

The battle of Armentieres was fought between the Allied and German armies from the 13th of October 1914 to the 2nd of November 1914.

Battle Of Gheluvelt Map Illustration

I created this illustration using Staedtler Fineliners on 300gsm Fabriano Paper.

The Battle of Gheluvelt was part of the larger First Battle Of Ypres. The German advance was partly successful until a counter-attack by the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment closed the gap in the British line.
